Up close and personal with the skunk cabbage

These drawings for a hypothetical educational magazine illustrates how Symplocarpus foetidus, a plant native to Canada undergoes a sex change during development. The spadix is shown half male half female to illustration the change from one sex to the other across time. Using a background reminiscent of snow helps to remind us that this is one of the first plants to flower in springtime.
